Advanced Clinical Placement
The advanced-student role in the Election Law Clinic offers a unique opportunity to deepen substantive legal knowledge and refine skills in research, writing, litigation, and client management. In addition to continuing their own clinical work, advanced students take on leadership responsibilities by supporting and guiding teams they are on, serving as mentors, and collaborating closely with Supervisors to ensure a successful learning experience for all participants.
Responsibilities:
Building on their previous experience in the clinic, advanced students contribute invaluable institutional knowledge and insight to case teams. They serve as team leaders, supporting new students and helping them navigate legal tasks. Depending on the clinic’s needs, advanced students may:
Mentor and guide new students through casework.
Manage case timelines and team coordination.
Oversee various case management activities, including discovery, expert coordination, and document preparation.
Take on leadership roles in specific case components, adapting their support based on the unique needs of each team.
If selected, advanced students will collaborate with ELC staff to be assigned to teams that align with their skills and growth goals, ensuring a tailored and enriching experience.
In making the determination of who we take, we’ll be looking at a variety of factors independent of your skills and contributions. We’ll consider the roster for next term, and trying to round out case teams based on the incoming students’ interests, experiences, and relative skills. We’re also looking at managerial capacity for the staff, as well as appropriate pairings.
