2026 Gregory and Emily Harvey Memorial Lecture with Prof. Aziz Huq

ELC was honored to be joined by Professor Aziz Huq as the keynote speaker for the inaugural Gregory and Emily Harvey Memorial Lecture. Prof. Huq delivered a powerful speech about dual-state democracy and patrimonialism. He addresses the current American political and legal climate by drawing on Ernest Frankel and Max Weber’s work.

George M. Harvey and Emily M. Wallace Harvey Memorial Lecture

George M. Harvey graduated from Harvard College in 1969 and Harvard Law School in 1962. After graduating, he returned to his hometown of Philadelphia and committed his legal expertise to election law and democracy. During his career, he fought to protect freedom of speech and the press because he saw them as the “lifeblood of democracy” (Philadelphia Mayor Bill Green).

Emily Mitchell Wallace Harvey was a writer, educator, and scholar. She served as a professor of English at several institutions throughout her career and published dozens of scholarly articles on poetry and visual arts.

The Harveys were committed to language and understood how important freedom of speech and the press were to the American Dream, and given the current attacks on First Amendment rights, it is now more important that we gather together to talk about and reaffirm our commitment to democracy. We thank the Harvey Estate for their continued support of the Clinic’s work of training the next generation of election law advocates.
